Massive Chapel Hill development adding senior living

Briar Chapel by Newland, a master-planned community in Chapel Hill, is planning senior living apartments and an assisted living facility adjacent to it.

The Liberty apartments, set for construction beginning late this year, will offer about 150 units for adults 55-plus. Design features for older citizens, including curbless walk-in showers, are offered. A wellness facility and optional in-home care will also be available.

The assisted living facility, set to break ground in 2020, will offer 105 nursing-facility beds and 36 assisted-care beds. Skilled nurses and other personnel will provide 24-hour care, personalized support services and memory care.

The apartments and assisted living facility, managed by Liberty Healthcare, will join forces with the Central Carolina Community College health sciences campus at Briar Chapel, which is already under construction.

Senior living homes are rapidly growing in interest as the American population continues to live longer and Baby Boomers hit retirement age. And Chapel Hill, with its access to health care and vibrant college community, has long been a popular spot for retirees.

Mike Scisciani, vice president of operations for Newland, said, “These new projects with Liberty and Central Carolina Community College now equip Briar Chapel to provide offerings for every age and stage of life.”

The community is located at 37 Cardinal Ridge Road, less than two miles from 15-501.

The 40,000-square-foot Central Carolina’s health sciences facility opens in the fall. The facility will house 18 classrooms and labs, along with about 15 faculty and staff.

Briar Chapel, one of more than 20 similar communities throughout the country, is owned in a joint venture between North America Sekisui House (a subsidiary of Japan’s largest homebuilder) and Newland, the master developer of the community.
